Character History

First Life

Selarth was initially born to a young, newly mated pair of dragons who lived in a lair not too far from Harro. Selarth was not an only child for he had a brother as well: Messa. Selarth and his family lived in relative comfort. His father was strict and quick to discipline and his mother was kind and gentle. Messa was a happy-go-lucky hatchling, always playing around. However, from a very young age, Selarth developed the disturbing behavior of torturing small animals much to the dismay of his parents. He became increasingly withdrawn and cold, especially in relation to his brother who he felt was becoming more and more of an annoyance. Eventually Selarth grew tired of Messa constantly telling on him for X, Y, Z reasons and ended up killing his own brother. His parents were almost hysterical with grief to the point where Selarth's father was quite ready to kill him. However, his mother interposed and said she would kill him herself, but instead she took him away and left him near the town of Harro. That was the last time Selarth saw his parents.

Heartbroken and alone, Selarth wandered the town of Harro for quite some time. He was taken in by a human family unaware of the circumstances of his abandonment. The son of the family and Selarth grew to be good friends and Selarth became increasingly protective of him. Later on, Selarth and his friend encountered a large group of bullies. The two tried to fend them off and flee, but they were cornered and beaten. Selarth took it upon himself to punish the bullies so he hunted every single one of them down and killed them. But it wasn't just a swift bite to the neck or a claw to the gut, Selarth was sure to make them suffer and he found himself enjoying every moment of it. Unfortunately for him, one of the boys from the group survived and told Harro's guards what happened. The guards tracked Selarth down and apprehended him. He pleaded that it was the bullies' fault and that they attacked him and his friend first, but it didn't matter. He had killed ten young bipeds, a horrible crime. When Selarth's friend, the young boy, did not speak in his defense, Selarth felt betrayed since he had killed those bullies for him after all.

Selarth spent several weeks in prison while the justice system decided what to do with him. During this time, Selarth teamed up with another criminal and they both escaped. Soon after they went their separate paths. Selarth could not return to Harro so he set off on his own. This is when he eventually discovered the Eastern Deadlands. Instead of frightening him, the blighted lands fascinated him and drew him in. He kept well away from the monsters and Aegis that roamed there, but while resting in a little nook he was discovered by an Aegis patrol. Selarth knew this was going to be the end of him, but for some reason he wasn't afraid. Before they could land the killing blow, a dark-robed figure told the Aegis to stop. The robed man stepped forward and extended a hand out to the bold little hatchling, but it wasn't a skeletal or rotted hand, it was the hand of a young man. He had defected to the Aegis in the search for more power. It was then that he took Selarth in; perhaps this little dragon could be of use to them.

Selarth had become a soldier of the Withered Aegis. The dark-robed man trained Selarth long and hard, teaching him how to be an effective killer. Selarth found that he greatly enjoyed being able to destroy and to take life. With every wayward traveler that he got to maul his blood lust grew. To him killing was the only thing that made sense now. Thoughts of love and family grew distant and hazy, but they never completely disappeared. Once the dark-robe man felt Selarth was ready, he imbued the hatchling with the powers of the blight. This only fed into his murderous and sadistic nature. His entire existence became centered around who his next victim would be. However, things would soon change. It came time for Selarth to have his powers fully released and become a true warrior of the Aegis. But when the dark-robed man tried to unlock his powers, the sudden increase in blight was far too much for Selarth to handle at the time and it destroyed him from the inside out.

After First Death

With the Gift came a new chance at life, and that's how Selarth ended up on Skalkaar. But his violent tendencies and blight remained with him. Selarth's memory had been completely erased due to the trauma of his first death. He had been reduced to a feral animal with nothing but basic instincts: the instinct to survive and the instinct to kill. When Selarth first stumbled upon the clearing where many people gather, his first thought was to kill the weakest looking person there which happened to be C`gan. However; as a weak, newly reborn hatchling, Selarth could do little harm. The others present at the time could sense the blight within him and were instantly wary, but many were willing to give Selarth a chance at life.

One such person was a sslik named Akrion. The kind biped showed Selarth that he too could wield blight. In Selarth's mind blight equaled good, so anything or anyone dealing with it was okay in his book. Akrion took the wayward hatchling under his wing and began to teach Selarth how to speak and how to control his blight. For the first time things seemed to be looking up for the little blight dragon. However there were still those who mistrusted the little hatchling; they seemed to be waiting for him to screw up and give them an excuse to destroy him.

Things started changing when Selarth's memories became coming back to him, mostly in dreams. Images of death and destruction flashed through his mind. Memories of a family long since forgotten, memories of who he really was. The urge to find answers consumed Selarth and he abruptly left to remember his past. The blighted lands in the east called Selarth; it was like coming home to him. With each step he took on the blighted ground, another memory came rushing back to him. Selarth's return to the Eastern Deadlands did not go unnoticed; his old master found him once more and offered Selarth the 'home' he once had. With minimal hesitation, Selarth agreed and resumed his training under the Aegis. It wasn't long before Selarth had regained most of his memories, how he had killed his brother, being abandoned by his mother, living in Harro, joining the Aegis; it was almost all there.

After two months, Selarth's master felt that the young dragon was strong enough to handle the full extent of his blight powers. Through a complicated ritual, the restrictions placed on Selarth's blight were removed allowing it to fully manifest. To ensure that Selarth didn't die again, his master preformed a second ritual similar to ascension on Selarth causing him to grow. His new more powerful body would be able to more effectively handle the blight and run less of a risk of being consumed by it. However, soon after these rituals were preformed, Selarth defected from the Aegis. He had grown tired of being a dog on a leash, nothing more than one of their pawns to use in the war against the Living.

With his memories restored and newfound power, Selarth quickly fell back into his old malicious ways. He had no qualms with attacking people for no reason. It could be anyone from a hatchling, biped, or another adult dragon. One of his first major brawls was when he and Slee got into a fight. Selarth crushed the Slee's ribs and Slee managed to rip off a piece of his right nostril. Avidly against harming hatchlings, Nyya stepped into the fight and it became an all out battle. Though it was eventually broken up, those involved were badly injured. Selarth didn't stop there. Without any warning, he attacked a hatchling who was crafting near Pratts pond. However she escaped serious injury do to the magical powers she possessed. Unwilling to control his murderous urges, Selarth attacked Hrough and nearly killed him, but Hrough managed to slay Selarth.

Selarth also spent his free time scaring a hatchilng named Sssargon who was terrified of the blight. He would tease Sssargon by sending small wisps of blight over to the hatchling and sending him into a panic. Sssargon's adoptive mother Runos stepped in to protect her son. She fought Selarth (and Sereamha later joined in) and Runos carved a purification rune onto Selarth's forehead. This sucked the majority of the blight out of him depriving him of his blight based powers.

Selarth's next victims were Sigvard and Nyoko. The incident started when Sigvard wouldn't stop taunting the blight dragon. Not wanting anyone to step in while he mauled Sigvad, Selarth waited until Sigvard was alone. Selarth found him and his young friend Nyoko near New Trismus. At first, Selarth mostly ignored Nyoko as he attacked Sigvard until she tried to intervene. Selarth merely swatted her away as if she were a fly. With a slash to the throat, Selarth cut down Sigvard, but the dragon still made an attempt to protect Nyoko. However it was futile and Sigvard quickly bled to death leaving Nyoko on her own. Still in a wave of blood-lust, Selarth slashed the little hatchling and killed her. This time, someone decided to take action against the violent blight dragon. Sereamha confronted Selarth. When Selarth was still a hatchling, Sereamha warned Selarth that if he stepped out of line she would come after him. Now it was time for him to pay the price. She incapacitated him with her vampiric venom and broke his wings.

After his beating by Sereamha, Selarth encountered a young red hatchling named Taylus. Now, Selarth thought this little hatchilng would provide a bit of entertainment and he decided to try and scare him. Taylus thought that Selarth was merely playing even when things escalated and Selarth mauled him. For some absurd reason, Taylus attached himself to Selarth. No matter what Selarth did he couldn't shake the hatchling, so he decided to 'adopt' him. However, Selarth intended to use Taylus as a test subject for his blighted powers.

Following that event, tension between Selarth and another dragon named AuRel escalated. However, as time progressed, Selarth began to tolerate AuRel more and more and the two slowly became friends. When Malestryx offered to remove the purification rune Selarth agreed, but the demonic dragon had tortured and placed his own runes on Selarth. AuRel was the first person Selarth told about what had happened to him. After the ordeal with Malestryx, Selarth's thoughts focused on getting revenge, and to do so he had to develop his skills. Selarth and AuRel's friendship was short-lived, both had ulterior motives. AuRel wanted to be rid of his addiction to vampire venom and felt that blight was the answer. Selarth took advantage of this and blighted AuRel like AuRel wanted, but soon betrayed his friend. Selarth had first blighted and used Taylus as a puppet of sorts by manipulating the blight within him. He wanted to see if it would work on an adult dragon, so AuRel was the next logical choice. After his experimentation, Selarth ripped the blight from AuRel's body and cut his ties with the dragon. Selarth laid low for a little while in order to avoid the angered masses. Unfortunately, he was found by SSiscor and the sslik tried to coerce into refraining from his violent tendencies. However, Selarth fought against SSiscor every step of the way even as his soul was slowly taken from him.

Selarth spent his time teaching Taylus how to use his blight powers and helped the him with his Rites. Little by little, Selarth had grown to care for Taylus and saw him as his little brother. However, Selarth found himself slowly being consumed by guilt and regret as Taylus became more and more consumed by blight. Taylus looked up to Selarth and all he could think of was how he had messed Taylus up. Selarth pushed those thoughts away and pursued training in runic magic with the mentoring of Runos. He wanted to be able to protect himself from others' rune magic as well as use them to his advantage. Taylus also ascended to an adult. He encountered another blighted hatchling who he took in also. Since she had no no name, Selarth gave her one: Azu.

Things took a dire turn when Taylus had been expirimented on by Ardorr without Taylus's consent. Even though Ardorr's intentions seemed to be good at the start the whole ordeal left Taylus comatose. Selarth found out that it wasn't only Ardorr who was involved, but a plant-dragon named Arborinthian was present too. With the instinct to purify blight, Arborinthian attacked Taylus while he was with Ardorr. Selarth found out about this and he killed Arborinthian. In an act of revenge, Ardorr came after Selarth for murdering Arbor. He, alongside AuRel who also wanted revenge, killed Selarth.

Taylus did recover with the help of Yukii. And things seemed to be looking up. Taylus and Nyya's daughter Severa had grown close and fallen in love. But the 'peace' is very short-lived when Taylus suddenly commits suicide. Selarth didn't know the reasons behind Taylus's decision to end his life and so he blamed himself. Selarth felt that if he hadn't blighted Taylus in the first place, he might still be alive. Unable to come to terms with what happened, Selarth withdrew and he slept for a very long time. He hoped that perhaps he would forget. Forget the pain, the guilt, everything.

After Taylus

When Selarth awoke, he wasn't the same. He became competely introverted in that he vowed to not form a bond with anyone ever again. His longstanding friendship with Akrion had become nothing more than words.

He was alone.

Selarth quickly fell back into his old habits of terrifying hatchlings and causing trouble. However, he found that it wasn't as satisfying as it used to be. He only did it for the momentary amusement, something to take his mind off of the emptiness he felt. Selarth began to question his existence in the world. He found that all he ever did was bring pain and death to everyone he knew whether it was through voluntary action or not. He began to feel that, perhaps, all his purpose was was to kill. Yes, at first, Selarth enjoyed killing; he reveled in it. However, after a third encounter with Nyoko, Selarth realized that he no longer enjoyed it. He only did so because that was what he was meant to do. Now he only went through the motions of enjoying torturing and murdering, but inside he didn't long for it.

In his mind, the possibility of friends, family, and love were out of the question. He knew that others would not forgive him for his past crimes and he vowed to never get close to anyone again. He had no other skills than the ones he had in blight and in killing. He was no longer a soldier of the Aegis, he had no one to protect, so what good were those skills? Selarth didn't know, but he refused to be worthless. So he gave himself purpose, but all he could think to do was to continue murdering. His primary targets? Hatchlings.

Back on his path of death and terror, Selarth often stayed in New Trismus, plenty of victims there. On occasion, he and Azu would work together to wreak even more havoc upon others. This eventually lead to Rorix posting a wanted notice for the two blighted dragons. LungTien was the first to come after Selarth, but he was quickly joined by two other ancients: Starstilanxs and Rorix. Selarth flew to a blighted area and managed to fight the three ancients, but there was no way he could win. He managed to escape by killing himself, but for how long can he run from his fate? Now a wanted criminal, Selarth's life is even more dangerous than ever.

Might as well continue down this path. After all he was irredeemable and condemned to being a murderer... right?

Death

Things had become quieter over the months. Selarth began reigning in his vicious nature more and more and he kept himself out of trouble for the most part. He even kept himself from tearing apart hatchlings on the occasions when they annoyed him. He lived with Azu and Drysten in Azu's lair far out in the blizzard lands of Mahagrah. It was a quiet life and completely boring, but at least he didn't have people hunting him. He even took up reading provided what he was reading was about battles and fighting. However, things became hectic again when the world learned that Azu was still alive. Azu had to show herself to go after Cynny to prevent her from revealing the location of her lair and that drew the attention of Zarla. Zarla had an extremely strong sense of justice and vowed to make Azu pay for her past crimes. Zarla also vowed to kill Drysten due to his association with Azu. Selarth had grown protective of Azu and Drysten and vowed that if Zarla and her friends continued to try and kill Azu and Drysten, he woul try to destroy her and her family. However, matters were resolved peacefully with the help of Akrion.

Things quieted again and Selarth spent his days hunting the wildlife around Mahagrah and dragging Azu out of her library when she was in there for too long. He moved into Drysten's room when he moved out so he finally had an actual room of his own. For the most part Selarth merely observed the world instead of causing harm like he once did. He came to realize the reason why he quieted down so much was because of Azu. If he acted up then he was sure others would go after her too. By simply associating with him, Azu had a bad name, and he wasn't going to make it worse. He cared more about her than he let on.

Selarth was out on one of his usual trips to a popular clearing where many tended to gather. He often stopped by to watch the failings of society. Little did he know, it would be the last time he would stop by. He was conversing with Ryzaak, Romirez, and several others. Ryzaak was complaining about how the elf who Selarth called Shade (Niveus) ripped out his blight. Selarth suggested that Ryzaak should just kill Niveus instead of whining about it. Niveus himself shows up and decides that he wasn't going to let Selarth escape this time. The elf began casting his magic on Selarth and Romirez and the others backed him up. Niveus needed five minutes of uninterupted casting to suck Selarth's soul into the void. Selarth, of course, wasn't going to simply let his soul be taken; if he was going to go down he was going to go down with a fight. The battle was short but fierce. Starstilanxs had arrived and also joined the fray. Starsilanxs and Romirez managed to pin Selarth down long enough for Niveus to rip out the blight dragon's soul destroying it forever. And thus Selarth's life of destruction and death was finally put to an end. However, people aren't likely to soon forget him. The scars, both mental and physical, that he left were deep. Many had suffered at his claws.

Physical Description

Selarth is a fairly large dragon, he is lean muscled and pretty agile for his size. He is coated in semi-glossy black scales with vivid green spots. These spots are due to his blight and they eventually fade if the blight is removed from him. The spots also glow when he is using and manipulating blight. Instead of the normal fins that run down many Istarian dragons' backs, Selarth has a row of spikes that stretch from the back of his head all the way down to the tip of his tail. Selarth has a "t-rex" head and a row of sharp serrated fangs jut down from his upper jaw. He has two horns that stretch back behind his ears, two spikes that jut back from the sides of his head. Selarth also has two rows of hornlets that run up the length of his snout and over his eyes.

Being the brawler that he is, Selarth is covered in faint scars, the most prominent being where Slee had ripped off a piece of his nostril during their first fight. C`gan did his best to repair it, but it still looks a bit "off". Selarth also has slightly tattered wing membranes.

Taylus: (adopted brother) At first, Selarth only took Taylus in with the intention of using him to experiment on. However, Selarth eventually grew to care for him and began to see him as an actual brother. But when he learned that Taylus had commited suicide, Selarth withdrew away from everyone for quite a long time and only recently has begun to come out again. This time he vows to never become emotionally attached to anyone again.

From Friends to Enemies and all Between

Akrion: A kind sslik who took Selarth in and mentored him right after his rebirth on Skalkaar. As a hatchling, Selarth was extremely protective of Akrion and would attack if he felt someone was trying to take Akrion away from him. Today Selarth occasionally sees Akrion

Azu: A dragoness that Selarth had taken in when she was a hatchling. Now, the two are more like partners in crime than father/daughter. However, Azu tried to atone for her misdeeds as a hatchling, but was still seen as an enemy. She has since exiled herself from society and is trying to create her own faction: Dasha Khan. Selarth currently lives with her and Drysten in her lair. Despite himself, Selarth has vowed to protect her.

Drysten A dragon that Selarth had taken on as a 'student' when he was a hatchling. Selarth's intention was largely to have someone to beat up under the guise of training, but has since grown to be friends with Drysten. Selarth is also protective of Drysten, but he will let Drysten fight his own battles unless he feels the need to step in (basically if Drysten is in danger of death).

Nyoko A dragoness that Selarth has had many encounters with, most of them violent. Even so, she still thinks that Selarth can change his ways and at least stop attacking people. She convinced Callihan to hold off on figuring out how to seal Selarth's soul away permanently.

AuRel: At first, AuRel and Selarth were not on good terms and even fought with each other. For a while they decided that it'd be best to be friends and not enemies, and they were. However Selarth and AuRel both had ulterior motives. Selarth wanted to experiment on AuRel like he did Tayls, and AuRel wanted Selarth to blight him in order to overcome an addiction. Selarth did like AuRel asked, but he betrayed the other dragon and removed the blight from AuRel after using it to physically manipulate him.

Atlanna: A hatchling who came to Selarth for fighting lessons. Selarth really doesn't know why he agreed to give her lessons since he couldn't care less about others. Perhaps it's the fact that he's being recognized as a powerful fighter. But either way he finds himself rather enjoying teaching how to fight. Atlanna has since become an adult and has yet to come back for more lessons.

Nyya: A dragoness Selarth has known since they both were hatchlings. They have gotten into a brawl once and it wasn't a fight Selarth is soon to forget. Nyya doesn't trust him one single bit and is waiting for the chance to expose him for the monster he really is.

Ri'ta'ra'thi: A hatchling who never trusted Selarth from the very start. He likes to make fun of the way she talks and rather enjoys getting into arguments with her.

Sereamha: Sereamha, the moment she saw that Selarth was blighted, was quite ready to kill him when he was a hatchling. Others had convinced her not to and give him a chance, but she warned Selarth that if he screwed up, he'll have her to deal with.

Siivyra: A rather mysterious dragoness to Selarth. Despite the trouble he's gotten himself into she's done nothing but help him out much to his confusion.

Malestryx: At the start it seemed that Malestryx was an ally. He had saved Selarth from Sorietha when she had gone into a rage. However Selarth discovered Malestryx's true colors when he went to the demon to have a purification rune removed. Selarth now carries Malestryx's runes that enable the demon to control him. Selarth now plots revenge against Malestryx.

Sssargon:A dragon who Selarth used to tease. Selarth found out that Sssargon was terrified of blight and would often send tiny wisps of it over to him in order to send the hatchling into a panic.

Runos: Sssargon's adoptive mother. Fed up with Selarth's treatment of her son, she fought with the blight dragon along side Sereamha and placed a purification rune on Selarth's forehead. Though he's long since had the rune removed, Selarth still harbors malice towards her. Despite this, Selarth decided that knowledge of rune magic was more important than hate and he asked Runos to mentor him. Much to his surprise, she agreed.

DharSii: Selarth doesn't trust DharSii one single bit and he's trying to constantly figure out his motives. However, DharSii has extended offers of help to Selarth on several occasions. Whether or not that help will be needed has yet to be determined.

Slee: When Selarth first met Slee, they ended up in a fight. Despite being a hatchling at the time, Slee did not hold back and went at Selarth full force. He succeeded in ripping a chunk of Selarth's nostril off. Selarth considers him to be a punching bag.

Hrough: A dragon Selarth decided he would try and kill for no reason at all. Hrough ended up winning the fight. Selarth has been told that Hrough respects him despite the fact that he tried to kill him.

SSiscor: A sslik that decided to take it upon himself to become a vigilante of sorts. He had taken note of Selarth's behavior decided to try and control Selarth. However since SSiscor no longer wakes, his control over Selarth had weakened and Selarth's soul was returned.

Arborinthian: A dragon that seems to be composed almost entirely of plants and vines. Being a creature of nature, Arbor has a hatred of blight and thus a hatred of Selarth, Taylus, and everyone one else who deals with it. Because of his involvement in the incident with Taylus and Ardorr, Selarth hunted Arborinthian down and brutally murdered him.

Cynny A very peculiar dragoness that, for some strange reason, committed herself to being Selarth's servant of her own free will. She's fully aware of the fact that he's only using her. However, when she started causing trouble, Selarth left her to her own devices and she no longer works for him.

Ceyra Cynny's sister. The blight in Ceyra had made her loyal to Selarth but she has been purified and no longer follows him.

Fierya A hatchling that Selarth had 'mentored'. He basically only used her as a means to get at LungTien (as she was his grand daughter) and was often quite cruel to her. LungTien still hunts Selarth to this day for what he did to her.

Iaslansandi A dragoness Selarth that quite enjoys antagonizing Selarth, but strangely enough, he hasn't gone completely berserk on her.

LungTien An ancient dragon that hates Selarth's guts. He's intent on hunting Selarth down for what he did to his grand daughter.

Zarla A dragoness who was intent on ridding the world of Azu because she thought Azu kept slaves and tortured hatchlings. She had tried to kill Azu on several occasions and thus has earned Selarth's hatred. However, with the help of Akrion and Shade (Niveus), a peaceful resolution was found. Selarth still thinks the world is better off without Zarla.

Niveus A wraith-like elf who goes by many names. He's earned his way onto Selarth's people-I-hate list by sucking out a portion of his spirit. However, Selarth restrains himself around Niveus due to his ties with Zarla and her family. The last thing he needs is to start up things with her again. It doesn't help that Niveus wants to consume Selarth. Eventually Niveus seizes the opportunity to confront Selarth when many others are around and succeeds in taking the blight dragon's soul.

Shinkuu A saris reaver who is intent on consuming Selarth too, but Niveus beat him to it.

Starstilanxs Selarth had killed Starstilanxs, his brother Tarkaras, and his friend Shaol many moons ago when they were hatchlings. Now an ancient, Starstilanxs is another one of Selarth's powerful enemies.

Draustin A saris with very bad past experiences with dragons; he was even eaten by a dragon, but due to his gifted nature he still lives. This has made Draustin very fearful of dragons and thus a perfect target for Selarth. He often terrorizes the poor saris making him the new 'Sssargon'.

Children

Thelras, "son": Before his death, Selarth asked Azu to create a clone for him to use as a 'backup plan' should anything happen to him. He took a piece of his own soul and bound it to the clone along with a surrogate soul to keep it alive. Should Selarth be unable to recall, his mind was supposed to transfer over the clone and he would be able to continue living. However, Niveus had sucked away Selarth's entire being so there was nothing left to return to the clone. The surrogate soul consumed the small portion of Selarth's soul that was within him and he became his own person.

Places of Note

Selarth goes wherever he pleases. Most of the time he's in a blighted area, mostly the deadlands in New Trismus.

Selarth now lives in Azu's lair.

Careers and Schooling

Selarth spent much of his early life with the Withered Aegis learning how to fight and be an effective killer. When he died the first time and was reborn, the sslik Akrion mentored him. Akrion taught the little feral hatchling how to speak and how to control his blight. Later on, Selarth took over his own training as far as dragon abilities go. He never once went to any of the dragon trainers and built up his skills on his own. He has a strong dislike for crafting and would never pursue it unless it was vital to whatever he wanted to do (which it isn't).
